Little Things
Do you ever feel that you deserve to have more in life? More support, more money, more friends, more likes on Instagram or Tik Tok, or more attention in real life. In that case, you may be focusing on wanting too much of some of the wrong things. However, you may not realize that you are being taught to be faithful and content in little, so that when you do receive bigger blessings, you are properly prepared for them. In addition, you may be being taught to steward what you have at that given time. By implementing that perspective, you are beginning to build a positive habit: making the best with what you have.
Matthew 25:14-30 is a parable about a master who gives each of his three servants a certain amount of talents (money). Verse fifteen explains that “to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability.” Notice it says, “to each according to his ability.” God knows the character and faith of each person. Therefore, He truly gives us what He knows is best in each moment. Our heavenly Father wants to bless us, but He also wants us to keep Him in sight as the Giver. It is important for our focus to remain on Him and not just on the gifts that are given. Now, going back to the parable from the Bible, the servant who received the five talents went out and got five more. The servant who was given two talents also doubled his. The master responds to both of those servants saying, “‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” What a beautiful glimpse of what God does with us! He chooses to share and entrust His gifts to us, and all He wants in return is for us to go out and use them for good. No matter how much He chooses to give us, He wants us to be faithful with it. Then, God will reward us with more, including more of Him! In addition, He wants us to always come back to Him as He gives us joy in return! However, let’s look at the one who received one talent in the parable. He explains in verses 24-25, “‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’” The servant did not receive a good response from the master after saying that. This shows us the need to take seriously what has been entrusted to us, while also using wisdom in the matter. Luke 16:10 states, “‘One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.’” This verse plainly tells how the way we handle what we have will transfer to how we will steward having more.
We are meant to live with open hands knowing that all we have to steward, whether little or plenty, is given from the Lord!
Think about what you have been given and if you are truly thankful for it. If you are, then you have the correct thinking of knowing that everything is a blessing from above.
God gives you what you need as He teaches and prepares you for the next thing.
If you aren’t thankful for what you have, you will always be searching for more of what you think you deserve. That void won’t be filled until you realize that you don’t deserve what you are given, yet God blesses you with His love and provision anyway! Being faithful in little is about being humble in knowing that all you have is God’s, so you want to honor Him with everything. Your heavenly Father is the only one who you can be more than content in!
There will always be other things to strive for in life. For example, when you get your license, the next step is to get a car; when you have a boyfriend, the next thing is when you plan to get married; when you’re married, people ask about when you’ll have kids. Therefore, it’s important to practice going to God in every season, and with everything, as He reminds you of what you have in Him! God reminds you to stay in the moment with Him and take in all He has given you, as He prepares you in the waiting. In the ending of the parable in Matthew, we really see the second part of the Luke verse come alive where it’s stated, “‘..and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.’” That is why it is so important to steward correctly, building habits with what you are given where you are in your life. By doing so, you are showing God that when you do receive more responsibility, you will know the right way to handle it! Remember, God knows when you are ready for the next step. Therefore, keep your eyes on Him and do good with what He has given you, being faithful with little so you can be faithful in plenty! He wants to bless you, giving you more of Himself and what He wants for you and your life. So, steward what you have in this life wisely and receive joy in Him now and in the next life!
